PlayRules overview
On your turn, draw one tile from the wall and discard one face up. Build your 16-tile hand toward five sets and a pair.
When someone discards, you have a few seconds to take the tile for a chow (吃), pung (碰) or kong (槓), or to win (胡). A win beats a pung or kong, which beats a chow.
Flower and season tiles are bonus tiles: set them aside and draw a replacement. The flowers that match your seat earn tai, and all eight win on the spot (八仙過海).
Complete five sets and a pair, then declare 胡. Every pattern adds tai (台), and the player who gave you the tile, or all three opponents on a self-draw, pays the base plus tai.
Taiwanese mahjong is played with 16-tile hands instead of 13, so a winning hand is five sets and a pair. It adds flower and season bonus tiles, and every win is scored in tai (台): each pattern in your hand is worth tai, and the stakes are a base amount plus an amount per tai. It is a different game from Hong Kong, Japanese (Riichi) and American mahjong, with its own scoring and claiming rules.
